If you have carpeting in your home, look for a vacuum that has excellent pickup and good maneuverability scores on carpet and rugs. A lot of models are adept at picking up dust in low-pile rugs, and some can be quite effective in cleaning up larger debris like orzo pasta and metal screws. But they don't pick up small particles as well as an upright or canister vacuum and may also miss ground-in dirt close to thresholds and baseboards.
